Fifteen people who have made outstanding contribution to China's population and family planning received awards of the fourth China Population Prize for their efforts in Beijing Saturday.

The China Population Prize, the top of its kind in China, was launched in 1993 by six departments and organizations, including the State Family Planning Commission.

Since the introduction of the family planning policy in the early 1970s, China's birth rate has shown a marked decline, with the birth rate in 1994 dropping to 17.7 per thousand, as against 33.43 per thousand in 1970.
