Britain would consider providing troops and lead the proposed multinational peacekeeping force in Afghanistan "if asked to do so," the Ministry of Defense said Saturday.

"We would consider any request for U.K. troops to participate in the peacekeeping forces in Afghanistan. But we haven't been asked yet," a press officer in the Ministry of Defense told Xinhua when asked to confirm a report that Britain is to provide troops and lead a peacekeeping force in Afghanistan.

"Of course we'd like to. Our policy is always very fluid. But no decisions have been made because we haven't been asked," the press officer said.

The press officer's comments came after the U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell told reporters he hopes an international peacekeeping force can begin moving into Afghanistan soon.

Powell said several nations had offered to lead the force. such as Germany and Britain.
