Last Resettlement out of Three Gorges at Hubei Begins

Resettlement started Wednesday for the remaining 1,037 people living in the dam areas of theThree Gorges Project. They are to move to a farm in Qianjiang in Hubei Province, to make way for the construction of the gigantic hydro-electric power project.

70% residents have been resettled

Resettlement started Wednesday for the remaining 1,037 people living in the dam areas of the Three Gorges Project, who are to move to a farm in Qianjiang in Hubei Province, to make way for the construction of the gigantic hydro-electric power project.

So far, 70 percent of the total number, or 110,000 people, have been relocated from the project's areas under the jurisdiction of Hubei.

70,000 Residents moved to new villages

Since 1999, more than 70,000 farmers living in the project's areas under the jurisdiction of Chongqing Municipality have been moved to new villages built for them in 11 provinces and municipalities including Shanghai, Jiangsu, Anhui and Hunan. At the same time, some 14,300 people have been relocated elsewhere in Chongqing

Resettlement of Three Gorges Dam

Construction is now under way on the world's largest hydroelectric dam, at the Three Gorges at the middle reaches of the Yangtze River. If all proceeds on schedule, in the year 2003, water will fill its huge reservoir at a level of 135 meters above sea level to allow the first group of electrical generators to begin operation. The entire project is to be completed in 2009. To make way for this project, 1.2 million people will be relocated. About half of these will be urban residents and the other half are rural residents.
