Social Stability Remains for Two Years in Macao: FM Spokeswoman

The principles of "one country two systems", "Macao people govern Macao" and a "high degree of autonomy" have been implemented in the Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR) since Macao returned to the motherlandnearly two years ago.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Zhang Qiyue made the remarks at a regular press conference Tuesday.

She said, the Macao SAR government, headed by Edmund Ho Hau Wah,ruled the region according to law and had made remarkable achievements. At present, there was social stability in Macao and the public security continued to improve.

Despite the economic difficulties Macao had encountered, its economy still grew. Macao residents lived and worked in peace and contentment. Their legal rights and ways of life were sufficientlyprotected. The Macao SAR government would manage the region well, Zhang added.

She said, although the land was limited in Macao and its economic scale was not big, it was opening up well. She expressed the belif that after China and China's Taipei officially joined the World Trade Organization, Macao would use its advantages further and play an important role in strengthening the connectionacross the straits.
