Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak and visiting Jordanian King Abdullah II on Monday condemned the exchanged acts of violence between the Palestinians and Israelis, the state-run MENA news agency reported.

"The two leaders voiced condemnation of the exchanged acts of violence which result in the collapse of the (Mideast) peace process and the bloodshed of innocents," MENA quoted Egyptian Information Minister Safwat Yousuf el-Sharif as saying.

During the two-hour talks, the two leaders also stressed the importance of enhancing coordination between the two countries and exerting efforts to support "serious active efforts" by the United States, el-Sharif added.

The talks came as Israeli helicopter missiles struck near Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat's residence in Gaze obviously in retaliation for a wave of the Palestinian suicide bombing attacks in Jerusalem and the northern Israeli city of Haifa over the weekend.

Although U.S. Mideast peace envoy retired General Anthony Zinni is still in the region to help broker a sustained ceasefire between the Palestinians and Israelis, there has been an escalation of the 14-month-old violence between the two sides, which has left nearly 1,000 people dead, mostly the Palestinians.

The Jordanian king arrived in Cairo earlier Monday for a brief visit to Egypt to coordinate the two countries' stances on the latest development of the Mideast situation.

Egypt and Jordan, the only two Arab countries to have signed peace treaties with Israel, have always kept in touch to deal with the volatile Mideast situation and the flagging peace process.
