The U.N. and the Iraqi Government on Monday signed a Memorandum of Understanding for the current phase of the "oil-for-food" program, a U.N. spokesman said.

The memorandum of understanding was signed after the U.N. Security Council last week approved a 180-day extension of the " oil-for-food" program.

The scheme allows Iraq to use a portion of its petroleum revenues to purchase humanitarian relief.

In another development, the council panel monitoring the sanctions against Iraq met behind closed doors on Monday afternoon at the U.N. headquarters in New York to discuss a range of issues, including a case of oil smuggling.
