Kenya, China to Cooperate More Closely: Kenyan President

China is an influential country in the world, with which Kenya will carry out closer cooperation, said Kenyan President Daniel arap Moi in Kenya's mid-western city of Nakuru on Monday.

The president made the remarks when he met visiting Chinese General Fu Quanyou, Chief of the General Staff of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) and a member of the Chinese Central Military Commission.

Moi said that Kenya established close relations with China soon after its independence in 1963, adding that his country is grateful to China for its long-term support to Kenya in various fields.

Kenya will stick to the One China policy and will carry out closer cooperation with China in the future, he said.

The Kenyan leader also expressed his belief that China will play a more important role in world's economy after it joined the World Trade Organization.

Fu said that the peoples of China and Kenya enjoy traditional friendship, and the frequent exchanges of high-level official visits in recent years have greatly promoted the development of bilateral relations and friendship of the two countries.

He said that with the joint efforts from both sides, Sino-Kenyan relations will be further consolidated.

On Monday afternoon, Fu held talks with his Kenyan counterpart General Joseph Kibwana in Nairobi.

Fu arrived here on Saturday for a three-day official visit at the invitation of Kibwana.

Fu's entourage include Zhang Dingfa, deputy commander of the PLA Navy, Wang Chaoqun, deputy commander of the Chengdu Military Region and commander of the region's Air Force, and Yuan Xinghua, commander of the Zhejiang Provincial Military Area Command.

Kenya is the last leg of Fu's four African-nation tour. He had visited South Africa, Zambia and Tanzania.
