Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon said Thursday that he is one of a handful of people capable of reaching a permanent settlement with the Palestinians, the website of Ha'aretz daily reported.

"I am one of the few who can broker a deal with the Palestinians," Sharon said while addressing the Editors Council's meeting on Thursday in Tel Aviv.

He emphasized that the permanent settlement to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict could only be achieved through a series of interim agreements between the two sides.

It is the first time that Sharon has publicly expressed his confidence in hammering out a final peace treaty with the Palestinians since he swore in as Israel's prime minister in March.

Sharon will depart for the United States Thursday night to have talks with U.S. President George W. Bush and top U.S. officials on bilateral and regional issues.
