China Never Barters Away Principles: FM on US Arms Sale to Taiwan

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhu Bangzao Wednesday noted that China opposes to US arms sales to Taiwan stemming from Chinese principles. China never barters away principles. Zhu believed that more and more countries would recognize the People's Republic of China and develop relationship with China in the future.

China opposes to US arms sales to Taiwan stemming from Chinese principles, Zhu Bangzao made the remarks during his chatting and exchange with the public through the website of Foreign Ministry on Wednesday.

China Stick to its Stance in Both Matters

Some netizens said that the United States, on the one hand, ask China to support their anti-terrorism, on the other hand, they sell arms to Taiwan. This is a dual criterion.

At this point, Zhu responded, "We support anti-terrorism stemming from our principles. In the same way, we protest against US to sell arms to Taiwan also proceeding from our principles. We won't barter away principles." Zhu stressed, "We stick to our stance in both matters".

Developing Trend Independent of Man's Will

Some net surfers asked that "some countries still have formal diplomatic relationship" with Taiwan. Some of them are still influential in certain regions. What will China do?

Zhu pointed out that more and more countries nowadays recognize and adhere to the One-China Policy. He asked in reply, "How many countries have 'diplomatic relationship' with Taiwan in 1950's or 1960's? And how are these now? The developing trend is independent of man's will".

Zhu believed that more and more countries would recognize the People's Republic of China and develop relationship with China in the future.

In April, the United States agreed to sell eight traditional diesel-electric submarines to Taiwan. Latest report said that attracted by the US$4b order, seven enterprises have submitted manufacturing proposal to the US military authority and bid to make submarines for Taiwan.

Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Zhang Qiyue said at a press conference on November 20 that China is firmly opposed to the proposed sale of submarines to Taiwan by US companies and has held negotiations with the US on the issue.

China hopes the United States realize the harm its arms sales do to Taiwan, keep to the three Sino-U.S. joint communiques, especially the one issued on August 17, 1982, and stop arms sales to Taiwan in order to avoid harming Sino-US relations.
