China Adjusts Trade Laws for Final WTO Entry

China's State Trade and Economic Commission will release a total of 163 adjusted trade laws and regulations at the end of this month. China has already released some adjusted laws and regulations concerning foreign fund use and intellectual property protection. The newly released intellectual property rights laws includes the Patent Law, the Trademark Law and the Copyright Law.

New trade Laws, Regulations to Be Released

China is in a critical period for amending its trade laws to meet the requirements to become a formal member of the World Trade Organization (WTO).

Yu Mingde, an official with State Trade and Economic Commission said that according to the commitment made by Chinese government, the commission will release a total of 163 adjusted trade laws and regulations at the end of this month.

The revision work is still underway, Yu said, adding that some former laws and regulations will be amended or even abolished.

Foreign Fund Use & Intellectual Property Protection Become Highlights

Zhang Yuqing, director-general of the department of treaties and laws under the Ministry of Foreign Economic Regulations and Trade (MOFTEC), said that China has already released some adjusted laws and regulations concerning foreign fund use and intellectual property protection.

The newly released intellectual property rights laws includes the Patent Law, the Trademark Law and the Copyright Law.



Special Group Set up for Trade Laws & Regulations

Since China and the United States signed an agreement for China's entry to WTO, the ministry charged a special group, led by minister Shi Guangsheng, to revise China's trade laws and regulations.

The laws to be cleared in the coming two years are mainly on issues such as market access, and the protection of laborers and intellectual property rights.

Experts pointed out the importance of maintaining transparency and fairness in the process of law making, which is also required by the WTO.
