Hong Kong is determined to develop a world-class information infrastructure, as part and parcel of its overall strategy to build up Hong Kong as a leading knowledge economy in the globally e-connected world, said a seniorHong Kong official on Wednesday.

Addressing a ceremony for the topping out of Hong Kong's IT flagship, the Cyberport, Hong Kong's Financial Secretary said thatthe Cyberport architecture will "combine the state-of-the-art interactive technology with a nurturing environment to facilitate the cross-fertilization of ideas in the IT field."

Leung promised that the professional community at Cyberport would enjoy modern architecture, intelligent offices, state-of-the-art broadband telecommunications infrastructure, a wide range of shared IT facilities, a cybercenter providing retail and entertainment activities and a 176-room hotel.

The port is not just an ideal place for big multinational corporations, and medium and small enterprises will also benefit from a wide range of shared facilities and services on a "need to use" basis, he said.

Selection of office tenants began in late April this year. Since then, the authorities have already received 72 applications from multinational, local and overseas companies.

The first batch of IT companies will start moving into this building around April next year and more than 100 companies will gather in the Cyberport upon its full completion by end 2003, according to Leung.
