China's Top Legislator Meets Macao Delegation

Li Peng, chairman of the Standing Committee of China's National People's Congress (NPC), met in Beijing Wednesday with a delegation consisting of representatives of four chambers of commerce in Macao.

Li Peng, chairman of the Standing Committee of China's National People's Congress (NPC), met in Beijing Wednesday with a delegation consisting of representatives of four chambers of commerce in Macao.

Li briefed the Macao delegation, led by Ho Iat Seng, on the economic developments in the Chinese mainland this year.

Li spoke highly of progress made in all aspects since Macao washanded over to China on December 20, 1999.

"Under the leadership of Edmund Ho Hau Wah, chief executive of the Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR), Macao has witnessedsustained economic developments, coupled with notable improvement in public security," said Li. "The achievement has fully demonstrated that the principle of 'one country, two systems', 'Macao people governing Macao' and high autonomy is fully right."

While extending a warm welcome to the delegation, Li praised the four chambers of commerce for the work they did for the peaceful transition and smooth handover of Macao and encouraged them to continue to make fresh contributions to the stability and development in the region.

Ho Iat Seng said that the purpose of the Macao delegation was to hold discussions and make contacts with certain government departments, and know more about economic development prospects after China's entry into the World Trade Organization and businessopportunities created for Macao businessmen.
