9.11 terror attack exerted notable impact on China's tourism
Sources said that the 9.11 terror attack exerted notable impact on China's tourism in October. Of the 15 countries providing main source of tourists, nine witnessed different degrees of decline in the number of visitors to China, but the situation was still better than anticipated. This, plus factors, such as the slight downturn in the Hong Kong market, and the hefty growth in the Macao market, still registered a 4.58 percent growth in the number of inbound visitors in the said month. In general, between January and October the number of foreign visitors approximated 27.97 million, a rise of 7 percent in comparison with the same period of last year. The amount of money, worth US$13.29 billion, spent by those foreign visitors, accounted for 89.7 percent of the national total foreign exchange income from tourism. In the first 10 months, there was continued growth in the number of Asian visitors, while the number of visitors from other continents also increased.

In 1999, total tourist arrivals to China and the revenue generated from inbound business ranked 5 and 7 respectively among the world top destinations. At the turn of new century, China has worked out its strategic plan for tourism development for the next 20 years and the goal is to become the world's leading tourism country.
