Macao-Born Portuguese Urged to Make More Contribution

Chief Executive Edmund Ho Hau Wah of the Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR) urged Wednesday the Macao-born Portuguese to exert sustained efforts to create a better future of Macao.

Chief Executive Edmund Ho Hau Wah of the Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR) urged Wednesday the Macao-born Portuguese to exert sustained efforts to create a better future of Macao.

In his speech at a grand gathering of the Macao-born Portuguese,the chief executive noted that the SAR government will carry forward the traditional culture and continue to develop a harmonious society.

The Macao-born Portuguese now living overseas are welcome to visit or settle in Macao at any time, he said.

Ho said that the Macao-born Portuguese have become an international group with strong links, which promotes and consolidates Macao's exchanges with the outside world.

"The group of the Macao-born Portuguese and its rich culture are always of unique and great significance for the development ofMacao," he said.

The chief executive praised the Portuguese for their active participation in public affairs and service for the society after Macao returned to the motherland at the end of 1999. ����

The SAR government has been implementing the principles of "OneCountry, Two Systems," "Macao People Governing Macao" and a high degree of autonomy in line with the Basic Law, he said.

Present at Wednesday's gathering were the Portuguese president's wife, Vice-Chairman Ma Man Kei of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference and Yuan Tao, commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign affairs in the Macao SAR, as well as more than 400 Macao-born Portuguese from Macao, Hong Kong, the United States, Australia and Brazil.
