France's Eiffel Tower, one of the world's most popular tourist attractions, is set to be repainted.

From Saturday, 25 acrobatic painters will start scaling the 324-metre-high puddled iron structure.

They are charged with sanding, cleaning and painting the beams with 60 tonnes of lead-free brown paint.

The job, which is expected to be finished in February 2003, will cost 20 million francs ($US 2.67 million).

It will be the tower's 18th repaint since it was built 112 years ago.

With six million visitors a year, the tower is the world's most visited paying tourist attraction.

However, its management says entries have dropped by 17 per cent since the September 11 attacks in the United States.
