A man opened fire in a mostly empty restaurant, killing his wife and the restaurant owner and critically injuring the cashier, then turned the gun on himself and took his own life.

Thomas Schutz, 57, followed his wife, Marilyn, from their home into Jimbo's Drive Inn on Sunday evening and shot her with a .38-caliber pistol, said police Chief Dan Johnson.

"An argument started at the house, we don't know what over," Johnson said. "She left and walked next door (to Jimbo's). He followed her over there. The argument continued."

Cashier Joyce Fawson was shot when she tried to call 911. She was listed in stable condition Monday at Tooele Valley Medical Center.

After shooting Fawson, Schutz went to the back of the restaurant and twice shot owner Jimmie Maddox, 72, who apparently was trying to escape.

Schutz then walked back into the restaurant and shot himself in the head, police said.

No one else was in the restaurant at the time.

Schutz and Maddox had some "bad blood" between them stemming from an argument over a parking lot, Johnson said. In addition, police had been called to the Schutz home on a domestic disturbance complaint, he said.

Grantsville is a town of about 6,500 people some 30 miles west of Salt Lake City. The town's last homicide was in 1986 and it, too, stemmed from a domestic dispute, Johnson said.
