President Jiang Hails More Sino-US Sci-tech Cooperation

Chinese President Jiang Zemin met Monday with Dr. Neal Lane, former assistant to the US president for science and technology policy. President Jiang and Lane exchanged views on the world's science and technology development trends and Sino-US cooperation in the fields of economy, science and technology.

Great Potential for Sci-tech Cooperation: Jiang

Jiang noted that China is the world's largest developing country while the US is the largest developed country. The two countries complement each other in economic fields and have great potential for scientific and technological cooperation, he said.

"We welcome more friends from the U.S. scientific and technological circles and entrepreneurs to cooperate with their Chinese counterparts," he said.

Great Significance for World's Stability & Development

He said that reinforced cooperation between the two countries in political, economic, scientific and technological and other fields are of great significance for maintaining the world's stability and development.

He expressed the hope that Lane will make new contributions to Sino-US friendship and exchanges in the field of science and technology.

Related Cooperation to Be Promoted: Lane

Lane said that the changes in China have greatly impressed him. Since the establishment of diplomatic ties between the US and China, the two countries have had a wide range of cooperation, including in the field of science and technology, and such cooperation should be further promoted.

Personal Info. of Neal Lane

Neal Lane, who served as president of Sigma Xi in 1993, is chief science advisor to President Clinton and a former director of the National Science Foundation. As director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, he has responsibility for providing advice to President Clinton in all areas of science and technology policy.

Lane is a former provost at Rice University, where his tenure began in 1966 when he joined the Department of Physics as an assistant professor. He left Rice from 1984 to 1986 to serve as chancellor of the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs. In addition, while on leave from Rice from 1979 to 1980, he worked for the National Science Foundation as the director of the Division of Physics.

Widely recognized as a scientist and educator, Lane has written or co-authored more than 90 scientific papers and publications, including a textbook on quantum physics.

He is a fellow of the American Physical Society and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Born in Oklahoma City in 1930, he earned his B.S., M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in physics from the University of Oklahoma.
