US Pop Singer Dies in Swiss Plane Crash

A US pop singer based in Germany, Melanie Thornton, was among 24 people who died in a plane crash near Zurich airport on the weekend, according to Swiss police Sunday.

A US pop singer based in Germany, Melanie Thornton, was among 24 people who died in a plane crash near Zurich airport on the weekend, according to Swiss policeSunday. Thornton, a Charleston, South Carolina nativewon fame in Germany after moving there in 1992. She had caught the doomed Crossair flight the day after playing a concert in Leipzig. The plane crashed on approach to Zurich airport late Saturday with 33 people on board. Twenty-four died in the accident, whilethe other nine survived. Thornton's new single, "Wonderful Dream", was to have been released Monday. The song featured on her latest album, with the entitl of"Ready to Fly".

In 1995, the singerput her alongside another American, Lane McCray, and called them La Bouche. Success came quickly with the singles "Sweet Dreams" and "Be My Lover", but, although they released other albums over the next three years, La Bouche faded from the pop charts. Thornton continued to sing and was carving out a solid solo career in Germany. She had also recently married.
