"Quitting" Wins Golden Swing Award in Bangkok Film Festival

Chinese movie "Quitting" was awarded the Best Feature Film Award in Bangkok Film festival which closed in Bangkok Sunday. "Quitting," an unusual new film directed by Zhang Yang, is the true story of a family's determination when faced with a crisis.

Chinese movie "Quitting" was awarded the Best Feature Film Award in Bangkok Film festival which closed in Bangkok Sunday.

"Quitting," an unusual new film directed by Zhang Yang, is the true story of a family's determination when faced with a crisis. All of the characters in the film are played by real people including a former drug-addicted movie star, his parents, his doctors and his friends.

Tsai Ming Liang, director of Taiwan film "What Time Is It There," won the Best Director Award.

"Cloud of May" of Turkey was awarded the Best Screenplay Award.





ABOUT ZHANG YANG
Zhang Yang (Co-Writer/Director) graduated from the Central Theatre Academy, director's department in 1992. After graduation he directed a Chinese production of "A Kiss of the Spider Woman" in Beijing garnering critical accolades. He directed over twenty underground music videos over the next several years.

He made his first feature film: "Spicy Love Soup" in 1997. "Spicy Love Soup" swept the domestic Chinese awards, winning the Huabiao Awards for Best New Director and exceptional film, the College Student's Film Festival Awards for Best Director and Best Technical Film, The Golden Rooster Award for Best New Director, The Shanghai Critics Ten Best Films Award, and the Changcun Film Festival Critics Choice Award. This is extremely unusual for an independent film in China.

Zhang Yang made his second feature film "Shower" in 1999. It won the International Film Critics Award (FIPRESCI) at the Toronto International Film Festival; the Best Director Award at the San Sebastian International Film Festival; the Cinematography Award at the Buenos Aires International Festival of Independent Cinema; the Audience Award at the Far East Film Festival; the Audience Award at the Rotterdam International Film Festival; the Golden Alexander at the Thessaloniki Film Festival and the Best Director and Best Film Trophies at the Seattle International Film Festival. "Shower" received rave reviews when it was released in the United States in July 2000 by Sony Pictures Classics.
