China has instituted a variety of preferential policies for overseas returned students to start their new careers, and has achieved good results.

A local official told a conference in Xi'an that in recent years many provincial governments have established special zones with international-level service facilities and favorable investment environments to attract returned students.

Some provincial governments have even promised the reduction or exemption of taxation for returned students' firms within a certain period, and special funds for them to set up projects.

All these measures have dispelled overseas students' misgivings, and lots of students have rushed to come back.

According to the latest official survey, China has sent some 300,000 students abroad in the past two decades, one third of whom have come back so far.

When asked why he came back, Yue Qianming, a returned student and vice-president of the Anbo Group Company, said that one reason was that the world economy is generally in recession, while China's economy is on the rise.

Another reason is that China is paying more attention to the contributions of returned students.

Yue said that his business volume has grown sevenfold in the past six months, and he sees a vibrant market awaiting entrepreneurs in China.

In fact, most returned students have achieved success in their careers, and become an important force for the development of China's hi-tech innovation and hi-tech products exports, a source from the Ministry of Personnel said.

Song Jianzhong, a doctor's degree holder who returned from Germany, established a private company named Edward Measurement Co. Ltd, which brought world-standard measurements to China.

Liu Ning, who returned from the United States, set up the Shengchuang Software Co. Ltd to specialize in processing software, setting a good example for the development of China's software processing industry.

The officials said that returned students play an important role in the internationalization of the local economy and in improving the administrative expertise of domestic enterprises.
