The municipal government of this east China metropolis has appointed at least eight former and in-service senior officials of the World Trade Organization (WTO) as its advisors for WTO affairs.

Director-general-elect Supachai Panitchpakdi and former director-general Arthur Dunkel are among the advisors who received their credentials from Shanghai Mayor Xu Kuangdi Saturday.

Three current deputy director-generals -- Paul-Henri Ravier, Miguel Rodriguez Mendoza and Andrew Stoler -- have also been appointed advisors to the Shanghai WTO Affairs Consultation Center, along with former senior WTO officials Kim Chulsu, John Weekes and Mitsuo Matsushita.

Also among the advisors are WTO experts John Jackson and Jagdish Bhagwati, and Japan's former chief WTO negotiator Minoru Endo. The advisors also include Chinese experts and officials. Among them are Wang Daohan, president of the Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Straits on the mainland side, Tong Zhiguang and Li Daoyu, both members of the National People's Congress Standing Committee, and Cao Jianming, deputy president of the Supreme People's Court. Incoming Director-General Supachai Panitchpakdi and several of the new advisors delivered lectures at a forum on the WTO and developing economies on the sidelines of the ongoing Third Shanghai International Industry Exposition.
