300 Million Chinese Benefit From Small Hydropower Plants

Three hundred million rural Chinese are the beneficiaries of small hydropower plants, Minister of Water Resources Wang Shucheng said Wednesday.

Vice-Premier Wen Jiabao noted that the development of small hydropower plants should be combined with efforts at flood control, ecological protection and poverty reduction.

Three hundred million rural Chinese are the beneficiaries of small hydropower plants, Minister of Water Resources Wang Shucheng said Wednesday.

  • Nine million cum of timber saved, 72 million tons of carbon dioxide reduced in 2000
  • As in 2000, small hydropower plants saved China nine million cum of timber and redued the emission of 72 million tons of carbon dioxide, the minister told a national conference on rural hydropower.

  • Located on upper and middle reaches of Yellow and Yangtze Rivers
  • Most of the country's small hydropower plants are located on the upper and middle reaches of the Yellow and Yangtze rivers, Wang said.

    Wen Jiabao called for joint-efforts and rural power upgrading

    In a message to the meeting, Vice-Premier Wen Jiabao noted that the development of small hydropower plants should be combined with efforts at flood control, ecological protection and poverty reduction.

    He called for accelerated upgrading of the rural power grid and rural electrization process, to attain sustainable social and economic development in rural areas.

    China Tries to Tap Cleaner Energy

    China will try to make more use of solar, wind and geothermal energy during the 10th Five-Year Plan period (2001-05).

    The country's wind power capacity is expected to reach 1.5 million kilowatts by the end of 2005, with the use of other renewable energy resources, such as solar and hydropower, projected to reach or exceed the global average.

    The combined generating capacity of small hydropower plants in China had reached 17 million kilowatts by the end of 2000.
