Russian President Vladimir Putin and visiting King of Jordan Abdallah II on Wednesday discussed anti-terror cooperation, situation in Afghanistan and the Middle East.

Abdallah II paid a brief working visit to Moscow, exclusively for holding talks with Putin on Wednesday, the Kremlin press service said.

During their talks, the Russian president and the Jordanian monarch had a "detailed, in-depth exchange of views" on a number of pressing international issues, above all the fight against terrorism and the situation in the Middle East and around Iraq and Afghanistan.

"It is now extremely important to pool the efforts of all nations in fighting international terrorism in light of the tragic events of September 11," said Abdullah II, who arrived here Tuesday evening and left for Amman on Wednesday afternoon.

On the Middle East developments, he noted that Russia "is playing a fundamental role" in the Middle East region.

Putin, in his turn, highly assessed Jordan's efforts in securing a peaceful settlement in the Middle East region, where Moscow and Amman are closely coordinating their moves to pull the peace process from a deadlock.

The two leaders noted that the Iraq issue was now coming to the foreground as the United Nations Security Council was scheduled to take a vote on December 3 on the possible extension of the term of the Oil for Food program by another six months.

Abdallah II said it is necessary to lift the sanctions against Iraq and turn a new page in relations among the Gulf countries.

On Afghanistan, Putin informed the king of the specific joint steps taken by Russia and other countries, including Central Asian republics, to secure the settlement of the situation in the region.

The two leaders also stressed the need for continued counteraction to religious extremism and fundamentalism.
