Construction of Qinghai-Tibet Railway Well Underway

A good start has been made on construction of the Qinghai-Tibet Railway and 1 billion yuan of investment is to be completed by yearend according to Sun Yongfu, vice minister of the Ministry of Railway.

A good start has been made on construction of the Qinghai-Tibet Railway and 1 billion yuan of investment is to be completed by yearend according to Sun Yongfu, vice minister of the Ministry of Railway.

Following completion of overall mapping, surveys, 90 percent drilling, designing of the Golmud-Wangkun section and that of frozen earth experiment, designing work on the Wangkun-Tanggula mountain section has also be well underway, sun said.

By November 17, 9.9 million cubic meters of roadbed, 6980 meters of bridges, 770 meters of tunnels and 6780 meters of culverts have been completed. The Golmud-Wangkun section has taken shape. The already completed projects have been accomplished at a higher level and as demanded of high-quality and high-standard projects.

In addition, constructions on 5 frozen earth sections and 39 assignments have been launched in an all-round way. Helped by intensive data collection and research tunneling work on Kunlun and Fenghuo mountain tunnels have also been started.

Sun said that since the constructions began, hygiene environment has been guaranteed, no accident has happened so far.

It is reported that the coming year will be a vital year to builders on the Qinghai-Tibet Railway. As planned, China is going to invest 5 billion yuan to finish 25 million cubic meter's roadbed, 13,000 meters of large bridges, 19,000 meters of small and middle-sized bridges, 19,000 meters of culverts and 3,600 meters of tunnels.

The route of the Qinghai-Tibet railway has been confirmed following the completion of a survey by the State Railway Ministry. The railway, which is seen as marking the further integration of Tibet into China, will extend from Golmud in Qinghai to Lhasa, passing through Nagchu, Damshung county and Yangbajing county.

It will be 1110 km in length, including 30.6 km of tunnels, according to the survey, the findings of which were announced on the Tibet People's Broadcasting station on 3 December. The Qinghai authorities are pushing for construction work on the railway to begin as soon as possible, arguing that it is essential for economic development and "stability and security" in the region.
