Ethiopian Foreign Minister Seyoum Mesfin Tuesday strongly condemned Eritrea's act of deploying troops inside the Temporary Security Zone (TSZ).
Speaking here after returning from New York where he attended the 56th General Assembly of the United Nations, Seyoum said if the United Nations fails to stop Eritrea's intransigence, Ethiopia reserves every right to defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity.
The Ethiopian government has appealed to the United Nations to stop Eritrea's destructive activities inside the TSZ, the foreign minister said, noting that Eritrea has opted to follow a dangerous trend that would result in renewed conflict between the two countries. He said Ethiopia has been implementing the Algiers peace agreement reached last year in accordance with the provisions stipulated, and the United Nations should tell Eritrea to abide by the principles it has ratified. The United Nations should call a spade a spade and put effective pressure on Eritrea that has been challenging the good will of the international community, Seyoum said. He also accused the Eritrean government of preventing the freedom of the U.N. peacekeeping forces inside the buffer zone.
