China to Build Five Animal Disease-free Areas

China will spend 500 million yuan in building five animal disease-free areas to meet the criteria for prevention of animal diseases set by the Office International Des Epizooties (OIE) and World Trade Organization (WTO), according to the Ministry of Agriculture.

China will spend 500 million yuan in building five animal disease-free areas to meet the criteria for prevention of animal diseases set by the Office International Des Epizooties (OIE) and World Trade Organization (WTO), according to the Ministry of Agriculture.

The five areas will be located in south China's Hainan Province, east China's Shandong Province, northeast China's Liaoning and Jilin provinces, southwest China's Sichuan Province and Chongqing Municipality.

  • Animal diseases expected to be got rid of in 2002 in the five areas include foot-and-mouth disease, swine fever and bird flu, Vice-Minister of Agriculture Qi Jingfa told a press conference Tuesday.

    The government intends to develop a prevention, quarantine and monitoring framework for animal diseases in accordance with OIE standards in these five areas, Qi noted.

  • Rigid barriers will be set up between the five disease-free areas and the rest of the country so that new diseases will be kept away and controlled, he added.

    Animals and their products as well as vehicles transporting them will receive quarantine and disinfections before they enter the five areas, he said.



    China's First Mad Cow Disease Lab Opened

    China's first laboratory for mad cow disease has been established and put into operation, the State General Administration for Quality Supervision and Inspection and Quarantine (AQSIQ) announced.

    The Beijing-based laboratory is part of the country's efforts to prevent mad cow disease, or bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE).

    The laboratory, set up by the Beijing Administration for Exit-Entry Inspection and Quarantine, occupies an area of over 100 square metres and is fitted with equipment and technology in accordance with traditional global practices.
