The trunked radio communications system used by some key government organs in China should be transferred from the analog stage to the digital stage, said experts Tuesday.

Experts made the call at a seminar on trunked radio technology unveiled here Tuesday under the sponsorship of the China Instituteof Communications.

Compared with the present analog technology, the digital trunked mobile phone system features rapid access, high safety andencryption. Currently China favors two systems, namely, TETRA and iDEN.

Professor Li Jinliang with an institute under the Ministry of Information Industry (MII) said that the TETRA system features amazingly rapid access.

He cited braking a train at the speed of 300 kilometers per hour as an example.

It takes 10 seconds for the braking order to take effect through GSM while it takes only 0.3 second through TETRA. In the former, the train has covered 833 meters before the order takes effect, while in the latter, the train covers only 25 meters, making TETRA more effective in emergency situations.

Chen Ruming, Deputy Director of the Radio Regulatory Departmentunder MII, said such advanced systems are needed for setting up commanding and control centers during big events such as the Olympic Games 2008 in China.

He predicted that in the next five years, digital trunked mobile phone systems would bring 10 billion yuan to China.
