To maintain a friendly relationship between the two countries and to further develop and deepen cooperation in various fields is not only in keeping with the fundamental benefits of the people of the two countries but also favorable to the peace and development of Asia and the whole world.

November 20, 2001

On the occasion of the opening of the 9th Sino-Japanese Economic Symposium, I would like to express my sincere greetings here!

It is reported that the Japan-China Economic Symposium has been held successively during the past 20 years. This is the 9th symposium. During the past 20 years, China's economy has developed by leaps and bounds.

China will join the World Trade Organization soon. Japan has always been supporting China to enter the WTO. Now, I am so pleased to see this comes true. I am looking forward to taking its entry as the turning point to further develop Japan-China economic relationship and make contribution to the economic development of the whole world.

Both countries are confronting new challenges. It is quite appropriate on this occasion to hold the Symposium titled "China's entry to the WTO and Japan-China Economic Cooperation in the 21st Century". I believe that participators of the symposium will have a lively discussion and offer suggestions to promote a further development of the economies of the two countries and the whole world.

Next year will be the 30th anniversary of restoration of normal diplomatic relations between Japan and the People's Republic of China. It deserves our memory. Japan and China will not only promote economic exchanges but also further exchanges in various fields such as politics, culture and sports. Concerning this point, Chinese President Jiang Zemin and I have reached common views during the APEC meeting held in Shanghai last month. Mutual understanding and cooperation between the personnel of economic circles from both countries are indispensable here. I wish to take this opportunity to earnestly request for the assistance from everybody.

To conclude, wish a success to the symposium!

Junichiro Koizumi

Japanese Prime Minister
