Hong Kong's unemployment rate rose to a provisional 5.5 percent in the three months to October, according to figures released by the Census and Statistics Department on Monday.

The underemployment rate in the period was 2.6 percent, also higher than that of 2.5 percent in July-September 2001.

A Government Secretariat spokesman noted that the labor market slackened further in August-October 2001, with employment continued to be dampened by the economic downturn. On present indications, a further rise in the unemployment rate was plausible, the spokesman added.
