Airliner Crashes in Northern Russia With 24 Reportedly Killed

An Il-18 passenger plane crashed in Northern Russia's Yaroslavl region on Monday evening and all 24 people aboard are believed to have died, said a spokesman for the Russian Emergencies Ministry.

An Il-18 passenger plane crashed in Northern Russia's Yaroslavl region on Monday evening and all 24 people aboard are believed to have died, said a spokesman for the Russian Emergencies Ministry.

The plane left the Siberian city of Khatanga for Moscow at 4:07 p.m. Moscow time (1307 GMT) and disappeared from radar at 9:24 p.m. (1824 GMT). Some time later, its wreck was found near the village of Zakharyino in the Yaroslavl region, north to the Moscow region.

According to preliminary information, there were six crew members and 18 passengers onboard the aircraft, who are believed to have no chance for survival in the crash, the spokesman said.

The airliner also carried 180 kilograms of cargo. Rescuers from the Emergencies Ministry and the Civil Aviation Administration have arrived at the crash site for investigating the accident.
