Ousted former Afghan President Burhanuddin Rabbani said in the Afghan capital of Kabul on Saturday that he would support an immediate formation of a broad-based government in Afghanistan, reports reaching Islamabad said.

Rabbani, who returned to Kabul earlier in the day for the first time since the Taliban militia drove him from power five years ago, also told a press conference that he would respect the Afghan people's choice of a future leader in the country.

He stressed that he and the Northern Alliance returned to Kabul "for peace".

Kabul fell to the Northern Alliance forces on November 13 after the Taliban troops withdrew from the city.

So far, it remains unclear whether Rabbani's return to Kabul is permanent.
