Scientific and educational departments have stepped up the upgrading of computer software and integrated circuitry production to give an impetus to the country' s high-tech industries and economic growth.

  • Computer Software Institutes to Be Set up to Train Professionals
  • Zhang Yaoxue, director of the Education Ministry's Department for Higher Education, said that the Ministry has selected 33 universities to set up subsidiary computer software institutes to train high-level software development personnel.

China has a good supply of qualified computer programming personnel, but lacks qualified people in the software and system development fields, said Zhang.

  • Institutes Provide Chance for Learning Computer Science
  • These computer software institutes will target postgraduates, and undergraduates from departments other than computer sciences who wish to shift to computer faculties, or bachelor graduates who want to study for a second bachelor degree in computer science.

Different from other regular colleges and universities, which must follow the State recruitment plans, these institutes will be free to decide their recruitment numbers themselves, said Zhang.

He added that these institutes will be expected to graduate nearly 10,000 specialized students each year.

Xu Guanhua, minister of science and technology, said his ministry will join hands with the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Economic Cooperation to ensure that domestic software products can compete in global markets.

    Beijing to Upgrade Software Industry

  • Beijing is to invest some 10 million yuan (approximately 1.21 million US dollars) in the coming three years to establish a quality control system for its computer software industry, according to sources with the Beijing Municipal Commission of Science and Technology.

  • Statistics show that there are now some 1,500 software enterprises in Beijing. Local software output value and software exports account for one third and two thirds of the national total respectively.
