Turkey and Greece have signed the joint bid to host the 2008 European soccer championships, further boosting relations strained for nearly three decades over territorial conflicts, the daily Hurriyet newspaper said Saturday in Istanbul.

The signing ceremony was held in Istanbul on Friday by Vassilis Gagatsis, president of Greek soccer federation, and his Turkish counterpart, Haluk Ulusoy on Friday.

"We have taken giant steps on the way to friendly relations between the two countries," said Gagatsis.

Relations between Turkey and Greece have been strained over territorial claims in the Aegean Sea and the war-divided island of Cyprus. The two NATO members have come to the brink war three times over the past 27 years.

The world soccer's governing body UEFA is expected to announce the host country for the 2008 soccer championships in 2003. Other countries interested to hosting the event include Finland, Switzerland, Russia, Austria, Denmark Sweden and Norway.
