Russian President Vladimir Putin on Saturday phoned British Prime Minister Tony Blair, discussing with Blair his recent meeting with the U.S. President George W. Bush as well as the ongoing military operation in Afghanistan.

The two leaders also talked over initiatives, set forth by Blair in a Friday message to Putin, on changing the nature of Russian-NATO relations, the presidential press service said.

Moscow values the attitude of the British leadership that suggests the creation of a new relationship between Russia and NATO in conformity with new challenges and threats to the security of the European continent and the world as a whole, said the service.

The two also had an intensive discussion about the military operation in Afghanistan and prospects for a political settlement in the country, it added.
