The Chinese badminton, which collected a haul of four golds at the millennium Sydney Olympics, is blessed with a group of talented young shuttlers.

While attending the ongoing ninth national games here, Li Yongbo, Chinese head coach, told Xinhua that he was pleased to find a slew of young players have come of age.

"The Chinese badminton enjoys a great depth, which is visible and tangible," said Li.

In the national games, the youth posed challenge to veterans, evidenced by the fact that Xia Xuanze, Olympic men's singles bronze medalist lost to unknown Lin Dan.

"This was still impossible six months ago, but now they did it," he said.

He attributed the emergence of young players to the talent-grooming system of China, which he thought is "a little advanced than those of other countries."

"We adopt scientific training regime, group them for long time, and invest a lot of coaching and financial resources every year to tapping the depth of the Chinese badminton. "Such way of training players is the most effective in keeping our prominence in the world."

Besides first-tier and second-tier national squads, the Chinese badminton has set up a youth team with the youngest aged 13. The age gap between the senior and youth squad stands beyond 10 years.

"From such young players here (at the national games), we could not only see the prospect of the 2004 Olympic Games, but also the 2008 Games," he said.
