More Countries Accept Multilateral Anti-Terror Treaties at U.N.

Prompted by the September 11 terrorist attacks on the United States, more and more countries signed or ratified the existing U.N. anti-terrorism treaties during the annual high-level debate of the 56th General Assembly session, which began last Saturday and is expected to conclude Friday.

Prompted by the September 11 terrorist attacks on the United States, more and more countries signed or ratified the existing U.N. anti-terrorism treaties during the annual high-level debate of the 56th General Assembly session, which began last Saturday and is expected to conclude Friday.

"During the General Assembly's General Debate, 76 States participated in the United Nations Treat Event - Multilateral Treaties on Terrorism and undertook 172 treaty actions relating to 41 treaties," a U.N. report said here Friday.

"The highest number of treaty actions during the Treaty Event related to the International Convention for the Suppression of the Financing of Terrorism," the report said. "The total number of actions it has received since the beginning of the event is 55 (47 signatures and 8 ratifications/accessions)."

During the general debate, Chinese Foreign Minister Tang Jiaxuan signed the International Convention for the Suppression of the Financing of Terrorism.

"The current level of participation is 118 signatures and 13 parties," the report said. "This convention will enter into force the day after the deposit of the 22nd instrument of ratification with the secretary-general of the United Nations."

The International Convention against the Taking of Hostages received 5 ratifications, the report said, adding that the current level of participation is 39 signatories and 102 parties. The convention entered into force on June 3, 1983.

The Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of Crimes against Internationally Protected Persons, including Diplomatic Agents received 3 ratifications/accessions, the report said. The current level of participation of participation is 25 signatories and 111 parties, and the convention entered into force on February 20, 1977.

Actions undertaken during the Treaty Event will enable the Optional Protocol to the Convention on the Rights of the Child on the Involvement of Children in Armed Conflict to enter into force, the report said.

After the September 11 terrorist attacks, the international community has put the anti-terrorism war high on the agenda, and the United Nations called on all U.N. member states to take effective actions to enable all existing 12 anti-terrorism treaties to take effect at an early date.
