Thirty-three miners were killed in a gas explosion inside a coal mine in Jiaocheng County, north China's Shanxi Province, Thursday night, according to local police.

So far, 12 miners have been rescued from the accident, police said.

Early reports from the investigation said that the owner of Podi Coal Mine built a new shaft too close to the former one, which may have blocked ventilation and triggered the gas explosion.

Leading local government officials rushed to the scene to organize rescue efforts.

Police and a team of investigators are at the scene trying to determine the exact cause of the deadly blast.
