No date has been set for Zhair Shah's departure from Rome, where he has lived since being deposed in 1973, and now sources close to his family will only say that he was "working hard on the project. Let's hope we will know something more precise soon."
Abdus Sattar Sirat, the former Afghan Supreme Court attorney general who is now one of Zahir Zhair's closest collaborators, on Friday categorically denied reports that a United Nations plane was already in the Italian capital to take him back to Afghanistan.
Zahir Shah's involvement in the post-Taliban peace process in Afghanistan was specifically urged by the special U.N. envoy for Afghanistan, Ibrahim Brahimi, during his recent visit to the ex- king's home in Rome.
