CPPCC Chairman Li Ruihuan Meets PNG Foreign Minister

China and Papua New Guinea (PNG) should strengthen cooperation so as to make greater contribution to stability and development in the Asia-Pacific region, Chinese leader Li Ruihuan said Friday in Port Moresby.
Li, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), said that both China and PNG are members of the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation while PNG is member of the Pacific Islands Forum and China is the forum' s dialogue partner.
The leader of China's top advisory body said this here Friday in a meeting with John Waiko, PNG foreign minister. He arrived in this capital of PNG Thursday for a four-day official goodwill visit.
Li stated that both countries, as developing ones, share the similar historic experiences and face the same task of developing their respective economy and improving their people's living standard.
Noting that the economy of the two nations are strongly complementary and there exist broad prospects of cooperation, he said, adding that both sides should grasp this opportunity and further explore areas of cooperation, in the interests of the two peoples. Waiko said since the two countries established diplomatic ties in 1976, bilateral friendly cooperative ties are continuing to be promoted.
Whenever PNG is in difficulty, he said, China would always render a helpful hand and the PNG people regard China as their sincere and reliable friend.
Li noted that when he met, on separate occasions, with PNG Governor-General Silas Atopare, Prime Minister Mekere Morauta and National Parliament Speaker Bernard Narokobi, they firmly demonstrated their stance on the Taiwan issue, which China appreciated.
He expressed hope that the PNG government sticks to the "one China" policy and make bilateral friendly relations proceed in a smooth way.
Waiko said his government will by no means change its "one China" policy, as so to ensure the smooth development of relations between the two countries.
