Prayers marking the beginning of the Muslim holy fast month of Ramadan ended peacefully Friday at holy shrines in the Old City of Jerusalem, reported Israel Radio.

About 100,000 Palestinians attended the midday prayers at the Al Aqsa mosque on the Temple Mount, known to the Muslims as the al- Haram al-Sharif or the Noble Sanctuary.

The number of worshippers was smaller than the previous year and many of them complained about the large police presence in Jerusalem.

Israel has eased closures on the Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza Strip and allowed them to pray at Islamic shrines in the holy city.

To heighten security and maintain order, Israeli police has deployed about 2,500 forces throughout Jerusalem Thursday night.
