Xiong Ni for Final, Sun Shuwei out of Contention at National Games

Olympic champion Xiong Ni qualified for the men's three-meter springboard final with a highest semi-final score at China's national games Friday in Shantou.

Olympic champion Xiong Ni qualified for the men's three-meter springboard final with a highest semi-final score at China's national games Friday in Shantou.

Xiong, 27, who represented his native Hunan Province at the quadrennial games, scored a total of 732.39 points in the semi-finals.

Entered in the event were a shing field including former world and Olympic platform champion Sun Shuwei from Guangdong, and other world champions like Tang Lianliang from Shanghai, Yu Zhuocheng of Guangdong, Peng Bo from the Chinese Army (PLA), and Wang Feng of Shandong, who won the one-meter springboard title here on Wednesday.

Xiong finished atop others in the preliminaries, with 478.56 points. Yu Zhuocheng, Wu Shuai of Guangdong and Sun finished sixth, eighth and ninth. As only two divers of each are allowed to be qualified for the final, Sun was ousted of the championships round.

The final is set for Friday evening.
