The organizers of China's Ninth National Games announced Thursday that several athletes had failed blood tests carried out on them during the games.
Li Furong, Vice-minister of the State General Administration of Sports and vice-chairman of the organizing committee, declined to identify either the sports and the names of those involved. But he confirmed that the disciplinary and competition departments of the organizing committee would soon release detailed information including the punishment on the athletes.
This is the fourth case involving banned drugs or failed blood tests for the quadrennial games. The delegations of Sichuan and Shanxi had been punished before the games were opened here on Sunday, as banned drugs were found at their provincial training camps.
On Tuesday, a boxer from southwestern city Chongqing was kicked out of the games and his bronze medal withdrawn, after he failed a doping test.
Zhu Henghai of over 91-kilogram category was immediately disqualify and his result was declared invalid. The boxer faces further punishment by the sport's national governing body the Chinese Boxing Association.
The result of test on the urine sample provided by woman weightlifter named Yang Lian from Hunan Province showed that the presence of testosterone to epitestostrone (T/E) ratio was greater than six, which represents a violation of the anti-doping code, " unless such a ratio is proved to result from physiological or pathological condition", according to the Olympic Movement Anti-Doping Code set by the International Olympic Committee.
The organizing committee noticed all the participating delegations of the result of Yang's urine test while the Chinese Weightlifting Association is making a further investigation into the case.
