China's World Cup Winner Li Na Takes National Games Platform Title

Last year's World Cup winner and Olympic silver-medalist Li Na beat her Beijing teammate Wang Rui to clinch the women's platform title at China's National Games Thursday in Shantou.

Last year's World Cup winner and Olympic silver-medalist Li Na beat her Beijing teammate Wang Rui to clinch the women's platform title at China's National Games Thursday in Shantou.

Li, 27, was awarded 76.14 points including two 10s and four 9.5s, for her third dive, a reverse two somersault in tuck position, which helped her re-take the lead. she never looked back and won the title with a total of 588.33 points. Li also won the Olympic synchronized platform title in Sydney.

Wang, two-time and defending national games champion, took the silver medal with 566.04 and 14-year-old Guangdong diver Lao Lishi was third on 564.54.

"I planned to lower the degrees of difficulty and try my best to perform constantly," Li told Xinhua after the victory. "I just performed what I could during the pre-games training. And I don't feel nervous when facing challenges from the younger divers," she added.

Lao, a green hand at the national games, said she felt excited for taking the bronze medal. "Although our daily practice had been tough, I know I could not perform well without such training," she said.

Sang Xue, 17, Li's winning partner for the Olympic synchronized platform title in Sydney and also winner of the event at this year's world championships in Fukuoka, only finished seventh with a total of 518.88.
