2nd National Games Swimming Titles for Zhang, Chen

Zhang Liang and Chen Yan both claimed their second title for their world's fastest time of the year at China's Ninth National Games Thurssday in Guangzhou.

Zhang Liang and Chen Yan both claimed their second title for their world's fastest time of the year at China's Ninth National Games Thurssday in Guangzhou.

Zhang from the Chinese Army, the surprise winner in 400 meters freestyle title here two days ago, overpowered her rivals throughout the women's 200m final and clocked a world's best time this year of one minute 58.11 seconds.

Yang Yu from Zhejiang, bronze medalist at this year's world championships in Fukuoka, had to settle for a silver in 1:58.71, which was her personal best. Shanghai swimmer Pang Jiaying came third in 1:59.01.

Zhang, 15, said: "I'm happy to win my second title in a personal best."

Former 400m individual medley world record holder Chen Yan dominated the 200m medley final for a world's best of 2:11.79, beating Shandong's Zhou Yafei and Liu Yin to second and third, in 2:13.82 and 2:14.43, respectively.

"I had expected to regain my form four years ago when I first set the world record. It looks like that I have recovered from the injuries on my shoulders and back as well as the stomachache."

Rookie Wu Peng from Zhejiang Province took the limelight in the men's 200m butterfly in a national record time of 1:58.89 and Shandong's veteran Jin Hao finished second in 1:59.03.

Wu, 14, said: "I'm surprised that I could win the champion. When I was at the 150m turn, I realized that I was the fastest. I'd given my best shot during the final 50m."

Hosts Guangdong took the men's 4x200m freestyle relay in a new national record time of 7:28.94, followed by Shanghai and Zhejiang, in 7:29.25 and 7:32.17.
