The total number of doping tests to be carried out during China's Ninth National Games is to be nearly doubled compared with the figure for the last national games four years ago in Shanghai, a leading Chinese anti-doping official said Tuesday in Guangzhou.

A total of 1,297 tests shall be done during this year's games which were officially opened here on Sunday, which represent an 87 percent increase over the Shanghai games, according to Shi Kangcheng, Director of the Anti-doping Office of the Chinese Olympic Committee (COC).

She released that strict anti-doping measures had been taken, some for the first time in the games history. among them are tests for speed racing horses, blood tests to detect EPO and in- and out-of-competition tests.

As the current national games have over 8,500 athletes participating, anti-doping staff face a severe challenge to themselves as well, Shi said. All the urine samples are to be air-lifted to the Beijing-based laboratory approved by the International Olympic Committee. Once Sample A of any athlete is tested positive, the athlete concerned shall be suspended and disqualified right away.

Up to November 8, the Chinese sports authorities had carried out a total of 3,784 urine tests this year on Chinese athletes, a 34 percent increase over the same period of last year. Of those done this year, 64 percent were unannounced out-of-competition tests, Shi said.

Boxer Disqualified for Positive Doping Test

A boxer from southwestern Chinese city Chongqing had been disqualified and his bronze medal withdrawn for failing a doping test, it was announced at the National Games here on Tuesday.

Zhu Henghai, who took the third place in the earlier over 91-kilogram category competition, had his urine Sample A tested positive, according to the report from the Beijing-based anti-doping laboratory.

The disciplinary commission and competition department of the games' organizing committee decided to immediately disqualify the athlete from the games and his result was declared invalid.

The boxer faces further punishment by the sport's national governing body the Chinese Boxing Association.

The organizing committee also announced the result of a separate test on woman weightlifter Yang Lian from Hunan Province.Yang competed in the 48kg category event on Monday but finished out of the top eight.

The result of test on her urine sample showed that the presence of testosterone to epitestostrone (T/E) ratio was greater than six, which represents a violation of the anti-doping code, "unless such a ratio is proved to result from physiological or pathological condition", according to the Olympic Movement Anti-Doping Code set by the International Olympic Committee.

As Yang failed to get any medal out of the event, the organizing committee decided to notice the test result to all participating delegations.

The Chinese Weightlifting Association shall make an investigation into the case.
