Forty suspected members of the New People's Army (NPA) with high-powered firearms attacked four telecommunications relay stations in a remote village in Compostela Valley province, the southern Philippines, Monday night and burned them to the ground.

The armed men supposedly entered the premises of each relay station, all walking distance from each other, sought the control rooms of each station, and set the equipment on fire by placing gasoline on them, the Philippine Star online news reported Tuesday.

The rebel group had allegedly said the owner of the relay stations, the Philcom Telecommunication Inc., failed to pay "protection fee" to them.

There were no reported casualties in the attack, considered to be the second incident of burning of telecommunication sites by the NPA in three days.

The NPA has claimed ownership of attacks 48 hours before on the cellular telecommunications sites of Globe Telecoms, Smart and Piltel which are the three major mobile telecommunication companies in the country.

In response to these attacks, the Philippine National Police and the Philippine Army will be conducting joint operations to pursue the rebel group.
