The medium to long term outlook of the Hong Kong economy will remain very sound, Financial Secretary of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region government Antony Leung said Tuesday.

Answering media on the impact of the New York plane crash on Hong Kong economy, the financial secretary said Hong Kong would be affected as it is an open economy and America is a large market of Hong Kong.

"Yesterday's accident in New York is a very unfortunate event. We hope that the truth can be found out so that consumers around the world can really stabilize and resume consumption," he said.

He continued by saying that the American economy is a very large one and consumption is very important. "If consumers are hesitant in their consumption, it will affect the American economy quite a bit," he said.

However, Leung stressed that Hong Kong people could also see that with the Chinese Mainland's accession to the WTO, with all the things that Hong Kong are doing to improve the economic environment, and with the investment in manpower, the medium to long term outlook of the Hong Kong economy will remain very sound.

"So, I hope that our people will not be too pessimistic about our medium to long term future," he said.
