Taiwan Urged to Realize Direct "Three Links"
After successively entering the World Trade Organization (WTO), China and Chinese Taipei should strictly abide by the principles of the WTO and there should be direct links across the Taiwan Straits, said Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhu Bangzao. The Taiwan authorities should allow the direct "three links" of trade, transport and postal service, as well as abolish any irrational restriction on economic and trade development across the Straits.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhu Bangzao said Tuesday that after successively entering the World Trade Organization (WTO), China and Chinese Taipei should strictly abide by the principles of the WTO and there should be direct links across the Taiwan Straits.
Invoking the non-discrimination and trade facilitation principles of the WTO, Zhu said that the Taiwan authorities should allow the direct "three links" of trade, transport and postal service, as well as abolish any irrational restriction on economic and trade development across the Straits.
After both sides joining the WTO, conditions are ready for the direct links across the Straits, Zhu said.
He also said that following Taiwan's entry into the WTO, trade relations between the two sides of the Taiwan Straits are still within the one-China framework, namely, the relations are those between China's mainland and one of its separate customs territories.
Economic cooperation and trade relations across the Taiwan Straits can only develop further within the framework of one China, he stressed.
By implementing the direct "three links", Zhu said, the two sides of the Straits can speed up relations at different levels - people to people, industry to industry and company to company, Zhu said.
