China Unicom and Telstra Signed Memorandum of Understanding

China United Telecommunications Corporation (China Unicom) and Australia's Telstra Corporation lately signed a memorandum of understanding in Beijing for furthering cooperation of CDMA concerned projects after an agreement was signed by the two parties last March.

China United Telecommunications Corporation (China Unicom) and Australia's Telstra Corporation lately signed a memorandum of understanding in Beijing for furthering cooperation of CDMA concerned projects after an agreement was signed by the two parties last March.

The memorandum specifies the detailed fields of their cooperation relating to wireless and fixed line business, mobile data and consumer services. It is agreed that with working groups formed high-level dialogues will be held and bilateral cooperation is to be developed.

Full discussions had been conducted by China Unicom and Telstra on the particular functions of telecom and telecom operators in hosting Olympic Games. According to the memorandum of understanding, Telstra will share its experiences in hosting Sydney Olympics with China Unicom, to help the latter play a bigger role in 2008 Beijing Olympics.

As a leading wireless telecom operator of Australia, Telstra Corporation operates both the GSM and GDMA nets in Australia. China Unicom, second-largest mobile-phone operator run with a large GSM mobile phone net in 322 Chinese cities and over 36 million users, has been given the right to exclusively engage in CDMA net in China. As reported, the first-phase project of CDMA net, as planned to be put at the service of over 15 million users in 300 Chinese cities, has been basically completed and is expected to be put into operation at the end of this year or early next year.
