Uruguay Congratulates China on Entry Into WTO
During Li Peng's offical visit, Uruguayan parliamentary leaders said China's entry into the World Trade Organization (WTO) will inject vigor into the organization and is expected to help establish a fair and just world economic order.
Chinese top legislator Li Peng started Monday a three-day official visit to Uruguay, saying he is looking forward to holding in-depth discussions with Uruguayan leaders on various regional and world issues.
In a written statement released upon his arrival, Li said Sino-Uruguayan friendly relations have developed smoothly ever since the two countries established diplomatic relations 13 years ago.
The visit by Chinese President Jiang Zemin to Uruguay last April has served to push the bilateral relationship to a new level, Li pointed out.
The two countries hold identical or similar views on many international issues and have good cooperation in handling world affairs. Bilateral trade and economic cooperation has been improved steadily too, he added.

Uruguay parliamentary leaders said China's entry into the World Trade Organization (WTO) will inject vigor into the organization and is expected to help establish a fair and just world economic order,
When China enters the WTO, it will surely abide by the organization's rules and carry out its duties while enjoying its due rights, said Li, adding the admission of China into the WTO will benefit the organization itself.
He pointed out that world political multi-polarization and economic globalization are two trends of development. For developing countries, economic globalization is a challenge as well as an opportunity. The WTO should pay more attention to developing countries' rights and interests.
The two sides also expressed willingness to further enhance exchange and cooperation between the parliaments of the two countries.
Other Uruguayan parliamentary officials attending the meeting were Acting President of Chamber of Deputies Ruben Obispo Bueno, and chairmen of the foreign affairs committees of the two chambers of parliament.
On Monday afternoon, the acting mayor of Montevideo, Ernesto de los Campos, granted Li Peng the title of Honorable Citizen of City, saying it represents the good wishes from Montevideo citizens to the Chinese people.
